Frederick Gustavus Burnaby (1842-1885) English traveller and soldier born at Bedford. In the winter of 1875-1876 he rode through Russian Asia to the Khanate of Kiva. In 1882 he crossed the English Channel in a hot air balloon. Killed at the Battle of Abu Klea when part of the relief force hoping to save Gordon at Khartoum. Cartoon by Edward Linley Sambourne in the Punch's Fancy Portraits series from 'Punch' (London, 1 April 1882).
