An estimated 10,000 took to the streets in Dublin in support of the republican hunger strikers in the Maze prison in Belfast. As the protest dispersed, about 500 marchers confronted an estimated 1,000 riot police at the British Embassy in Ballsbridge, and violence quickly ensued. Hundreds of office and shop windows were smashed. Ten hunger strikers ultimately died of starvation in the Maze, including elected Westminster MP Bobby Sands.
