Jacques Alexander Cesar Charles (1746-83) French physicist. Print celebrating the first ascent in a hydrogen balloon, made by Charles from the Tuileries, Paris, on 1 December 1783. He discovered connection between expansion of gases and rise in temperature (Charles's Law). Engraving by Simon Charles Miger (1747-1805).
