D503 - 1970 I.C.I. Press Conference regarding Paraquat weedkiller at the Royal Hibernian Hotel
17 July 1970
I.C.I. Press Conference regarding Paraquat weedkiller at the Royal Hibernian Hotel, Dublin. The conference was part of a campaign, in consultation with the Department of Health, to warn the public of the dangers of decanting the weedkiller into other containers such as unlabelled bottles. This had been the cause of a number of deaths over the previous 8 years as people mistook the chemical for beer, whiskey or cordial. The company planned to write to all 267,000 farmers in the Republic to warn of the dangers of the practice.
