A new safety helmet for use by hurling players was shown publicly for the first time at Croke Park on the 21st of April 1970. The helmet was the first of its kind to be designed and manufactured completely in Ireland. The helmet was manufactured by William Cox (Ireland) LTD. The director and general manager, Mr. Jim Shannon presented some sample helmets to Seán Ó Síocháin, General Secretary of the G.A.A. The helmets were available in county or club colours.
