He wrote numerous adventure novels, the best-remembered of which are 'King Solomon's Mines' (1885) and its sequel 'Allan Quartermain' (1887), and 'She' (1887) and its sequel 'Ayesha' (1905). Cartoon by 'Spy' (Leslie Ward, 1851-1922) from 'Vanity Fair' (London, 21 May 1887).
