38th Battalion advance party leave for the Congo for United Nations duty. the advance party of the 38th battalion and the 2nd Armoured Squadron left Dublin Airport for the Congo by specially chartered Sabena 707 Boeing jet. The 150 troops would arrive in the Congo the next day. Picture shows Commandant Donal O'Donovan (left), Tralee, of the 38th Battalion chatting to Captain L.W. Thorne, Captain of the Sabena jet and Commandant Kevin Nunan (left), Ardfert, Co. Kerry who was in charge of the troops on board. Commandant Nunan later won the Distinguished Service Medal With Honour in the Congo for bravery in rescuing Trooper Nolan from drowning in the Mulangwoshi river.
