Portlaoise prison Hunger Strike Picket..1975..04.12.1975..12.04.1975..4th December 1975..As part of an ongoing protest to gain political status several I.R.A. members jailed in Portlaoise prison went on hunger strike. The inmates stated that their status as criminals was wrong as they were fighting for Irish freedom and not engaging in otherwise criminal activity. As the protest continued at the prison, a picket was placed on Leinster House in Dublin by family of those taking part in the hunger strike. The purpose of the picket was also to draw attention to the conditions pertaining in the prison at the time. Portlaoise prison is Ireland's maximum security prison,it is used to house those convicted of paramilitary activities as well as hardened dangerous criminals..Picture shows the family members of those on hunger strike picketing the Dail at Leinster House, Dublin.Add to Cart
