The artist uses perspective to create spatial depth but the medieval technique of raised gesso (plaster) for the pattern on the Virgin's robe. Originally from Venice, Crivelli settled in the town of Ascoli Piceno, where his style must have seemed both strikingly new and comfortably familiar.
