Arthur Gilbert succeeded in purchasing this snuffbox with diamond flowers from the N.Y. jeweller Harry Winston but only after he had bought a set of yellow diamonds to establish himself as an important customer. The scene carved in hardstones on the base is adapted from a painting by Jean Baptiste Oudry (1686-1755) of a water spaniel and a swan, the latter replaced with a colourful mallard.
