Homo neanderthalensis, La Ferrassie 1 skull, about 70,000 years ago. Cast of an adult male skull from a skeleton found at the La Ferrassie rock shelter, near Les Eyzies, France in 1909. The skull shows typical Neanderthal features including a receding forehead, low vaulted cranium and prominent double brow-ridge. Seven other Neanderthal skeletons were also found buried at the site. Neanderthals lived in Europe from about 200,000-30,000 years ago.
