Robert Blake (1599-1657) English naval commander, born at Bridgwater, Somerset. During the English Civil War he fought on the side of Parliament against Charles I. In 1649 Blake was appointed General at Sea (Admiral) and rebuilt the navy and rewrote naval tactics. From 'The Gallery of Portraits', Vol II, by Charles Knight (London, 1833). Engraving.
