H.A. van Rheede tot Drakenstein. South Africa owes much to this man. During his stay in 1685 he made many regulations, the greater part of which remained in force to the end of the Dutch East India Company's rule. He caused standard plans to be drawn up for the building of farms such as are still to be met with in the districts of Stellenbosch and The Paarl.
