Marco Barbarigo circa 1449-50. Follower of Jan van Eyck 1395-1441). Marco Barbarigo was the Venetian consul in London, responsible for protecting the interests of Venetian merchants. He later went on to become the doge of Venice. This portrait is painted in the precise and detailed Netherlandish style. Expensive and fashionable, it would have indicated the culture and status of its owners.
