Horatio Herbert Kitchener (1850-1916) Irish-born British soldier and statesman. In the Sudan War he defeated the troops of the Mahdi at Omdurman (1898). Commander-in-chief of the British campaign in the Boer War from 1900. Secretary of State for War at the beginning of World War I. After a cartoon by 'Spy' (Leslie Ward, 1851-1922) from 'Vanity Fair' (London, 1899).
