Rouget de Lisle (1760-1836, lithograph by Angers. Rouget de Lise wrote the words of La Marseillaise in April 1792. The melody may be derived from a set of variations written by Viotti in 1784. Alexandre Boucher, the violinist and admirer of Beethoven, may also have been involved in composing the music.
