Arms Find Aboard The Merchant Ship "Claudia"
29th March 1973
On the 28th March three Irish naval vessels intrcepted a ship near Helvick Head,Co Waterford. The ship,"The Claudia" was found to contain over 5 tonnes of weaponery destined for the Provisional I.R.A. in Ireland. The weapons included over 1000 rifles and hand guns,Semtex plastic explosive,rocket launchers and land mines. The weapons originated in Libya. Found on board ship was Joe Cahill who was thought to be a leading light within the provisional movement,he was arrested and taken into custody..Pictured at the press conference to announce the capture of the weapons were (L-R) Captain Thomas McKenna, O/C Naval Services, Minister for Defence, Mr Patrick Donegan TD and Maj-General T.O'Carroll Army Chief of Staff. Mr Donegan was outlining the naval arrest of the "Claudia' and taking questions from the assembled press corps.
