![Laurel and Hardy present cheque on behalf of Premier (DOMAS) to Little Willie Fund.22/09/1953..Laurel and Hardy were one of the most popular and critically acclaimed comedy double acts of the early Classical Hollywood era of American cinema. Composed of thin Englishman Stan Laurel (1890-1965) and heavy American Oliver Hardy (1892-1957) they became well known during the late 1920s to the mid-1940s for their slapstick comedy, with Laurel playing the clumsy and childlike friend of the pompous Hardy.[1] They made over 100 films together, initially two-reelers (short films) before expanding into feature length films in the 1930s. Their films include Sons of the Desert (1933), the Academy Award winning short film The Music Box (1932), Babes in Toyland (1934), and Way Out West (1937). Hardy's catchphrase "Well, here's another nice mess you've gotten me into!" is still widely recognized.](http://cdn.c.photoshelter.com/img-get/I0000JAPSuLDJe0g/t/200/I0000JAPSuLDJe0g.jpg)

![Ronnie Delaney Welcomed Home from Melbourne at Mansion House.19/12/1956..Ronald Michael Delany (06/03/1935), better known as Ron or Ronnie is a former Irish athlete, who specialised in middle distance running..Born in Arklow, Delany moved with his family to Dublin when he was 6. His father had got a job in Jacobs Biscuit Factory and there Delany went to Catholic University School..Delany studied in the United States at Villanova University, where he was coached by the well-known track coach Jumbo Elliott. His first achievement of note was reaching the final of the 800m at the 1954 European Championships in Bern..In 1956, he became the seventh runner to join the club of Four-minute milers, but nonetheless struggled to make the Irish team for the 1956 Summer Olympics held in Melbourne..Delany qualified for the Olympic 1500 m final, in which home runner John Landy was the big favourite. Delany kept close to Landy until the final lap, when he started a crushing final sprint, winning the race in a new Olympic Record.[3] Delany thereby became the first Irishman to win an Olympic title in athletics since Bob Tisdall in 1932..Delany won the Bronze medal at the 1958 European Championships at 1500m.Delany went on to represent Ireland once again at the 1960 Summer Olympics held in Rome, this time in the 800 metres. He finished 6th in his quarter-final..He remained the last Olympics champion of Ireland for 36 years, until Michael Carruth won the gold medal in boxing at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona..Delany continued his running career in North America, winning four successive AAU titles in the mile, adding to his total of four Irish national titles, and three NCAA titles. He was next to unbeatable on indoor tracks over that period, which included a 40-race winning streak. He broke the World Indoor Mile Record on three occasions..He was granted the Freedom of Dublin City in 2006.Was also conferred with an honorary Doctor of Laws Degree by University College Dublin in 2006. Schumacher & Co., Tiffany & Co., etc. She was named to the International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame in 1965..Sybil Connolly was born to a Welsh mother and an Irish father; they moved to County Waterford, where she was educated at a convent school run by the Sisters of Mercy. Her interest in fashion led her to London, aged 17, to study dressmaking with Bradley & Co..Her clothes were sought after in the United States and she had an impressive list of clients from prominent families such as the Rockefellers, Mellons and Duponts, to famous actresses of the day. Jacqueline Kennedy wore a Sybil Connolly creation when she sat for her official White House portrait and visited the designer in Ireland. A showcase for her excellent taste in interior decoration, her home was featured in House Beautiful in 1967.[citation needed].In the 1980s, Sybil Connolly began designing for luxury goods makers Tiffany & Co of New York, Tipperary Crystal, Brunschwig & Fils, and Schumacher. ![Archbishop Godfrey leaving for London - for Catholic Herald .05/12/1958 ..William Godfrey (1889-1963) was an English Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as Archbishop of Westminster from 1956 until his death, and was elevated to the cardinalate in 1958..William Godfrey was born in Liverpool to George and Mary Godfrey. His father was a haulage contractor. He leaned towards the priesthood from an early age, never taking another career into serious consideration. After studying at Ushaw College, Durham, and the English College, Rome, he was ordained on 28 October 1916 in Rome. He then finished his studies in 1918, obtaining his doctorates in divinity and philosophy in 1917, and did pastoral work in Liverpool until 1919. He taught Classics, Philosophy and Theology at Ushaw from 1918 to 1930, the year when he was raised to the rank of Domestic Prelate of His Holiness (28 October), with the title of monsignor, and appointed rector of the English College. At the College, the strict priest was known to his students as "Uncle Bill". In 1935, Godfrey was made a member of the Pontifical Commission to Malta, and he was in official attendance at the 1937 coronation of King George VI..On 21 November 1938, he was appointed Titular Bishop of Cius and first Apostolic Delegate to Great Britain, Gibraltar and Malta. Godfrey, who was the first papal representative to England since the Reformation,[4] received his episcopal consecration on the following 21 December from Cardinal Raffaele Rossi, OCD, with Archbishop Luigi Traglia and Bishop Ralph Hayes serving as co-consecrators, in the chapel of the English College. He was also chargé d'affaires of the Holy See to the Polish government-in-exile in London in 1943, and was made Archbishop of Liverpool on 10 November 1953..Pope Pius XII named Godfrey as Archbishop of Westminster, and thus the ranking prelate of the Catholic Church in England and Wales, on 3 December 1956. ![Milo O'Shea's New Year's Resolutions.30/12/1959..Milo O'Shea (born 2 June 1926) is an Irish character actor..He was born and raised in Dublin and educated by the Christian Brothers at Synge Street, along with his friend Donal Donnelly..He was discovered in the 1950s by Harry Dillon, who ran the "37 Theatre Club" on the top floor of his shop The Swiss Gem Company, 51 Lower O'Connell Street Dublin..O'Shea was once married to Maureen Toal, an Irish actress..He began acting on the stage, then moved into film in the 1960s. He became popular in the UK as a result of starring in the BBC sitcom Me Mammy alongside Yootha Joyce. In 1967-68 he appeared in the drama Staircase, co-starring Eli Wallach and directed by Barry Morse, which stands as Broadway's first depiction of homosexual men in a serious way..O'Shea starred as Leopold Bloom in Joseph Strick's 1967 film version of Ulysses. Among his other memorable film roles in the 1960s were as the well-intentioned Friar Laurence in Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet and as the villainous Dr. Durand Durand (who tries to kill Jane Fonda's character by making her literally die of pleasure) in Roger Vadim's counterculture classic Barbarella (both films were released in 1968). In 1984, O'Shea reprised his role as Dr. Durand Durand (credited as Dr. Duran Duran) for the Duran Duran concert film Arena, since his character inspired the band's name. He played Inspector Boot in the 1973 Vincent Price horror film Theatre of Blood..He has been active in American films and TV, such as his memorable supporting role as the trial judge in the Sidney Lumet directed movie The Verdict with Paul Newman, an episode of the The Golden Girls in 1987, and portraying Chief Justice of the United States Roy Ashland in the TV series The West Wing. In a celebrated 1995 episode of Frasier entitled "Shrink Rap", he played Dr. Schachter, a couples therapist who counsels the Crane brothers together.[1] He appeared in the pilot episode of Early Edition as Sher](http://cdn.c.photoshelter.com/img-get/I0000mx9o0LRzoUc/t/200/I0000mx9o0LRzoUc.jpg)
